Personal Growth - Key to Your Success

By Richard Onebamoi

"Change is the end result of all true learning. Change involves three things: First, dissatisfaction with self-a felt void or need; second, decisions to change-to fill the void or need; and third, a conscious dedication to the process of growth and change-the willful act of making the change; Doing Something." Dr. Felice Leonardo Buscaglia.

Personal growth is a process that is linked to self improvement and the acquisition of skills. It is directly impacted by the extent to which you are willing to stretch yourself career-wise, strive to achieve excellent health, pursue your goals and definite purpose. It is all about improving the overall quality of your life. Personal growth is not without work, it requires effort, for which the following steps are necessary:

• A desire to change

• The decision to take action

• The discipline to practice the new behaviors you have decided upon.

• The determination to persist until you achieves the desired results.

The first of Isaac Newton's three laws of motion states that: "An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless compelled by some external force to act otherwise."

The above principle is not limited to the esoteric world of science. It does have a universal application, and holds direct relevance to our psychological response to problems. The capacity and readiness to diagnose problems and administer the right solutions ranks high among the set of essential competencies for effective personal and professional leadership.

The main point in Newton's first law of motion is that change never happens unless somebody makes it happen. Jim Rohn, the America philosopher, explains in terms that just about anybody can relate to with the simple statement, "for things to change you must change." "For things to get better you must get better."

In order to commit to a positive change, you must be disconcerted by the existing state of affairs in your life. In the absence of such perturbation, any commitment to restructuring will be at best weak. When one has reached a point of profound dissatisfaction with the status quo and dismal condition this then becomes the impetus that drives one into strategic action.

Another prerequisite for change is to believe you can actually make a difference. This is where many lose their nerve. As they contemplate the enormity of their situation and the apparent inadequacy of their abilities and resources, they conclude that there is no point trying. The truth of the matter is you are loaded with gifts, experiences, abilities and talents with which you can make a difference.

Baten said "Weak men wait for opportunities; strong men make them." If change must occur you have to make it happen, just do not wait for the opportunity to arise, create one for the anticipated change and it will happen for you. There is no better time to get started on this journey but now. As noted by William James "To change one's life: start immediately, do it flamboyantly and without exception."
