Practicing Happiness in Your Daily Life

By Glenn Cutforth

For some people, happiness seems to be elusive, no matter how much they seek it, while others are able to reach out and grasp happiness as naturally as breathing.

Even though happiness has a different meaning for each individual, there are some similarities, which means there are a lot of actions people can take to assist themselves with their personal pursuit of happiness.

People who consider themselves truly happy tend to have a real sense of purpose in their lives. So what is your passion? Are you living it? Whether it's faith in God that brings happiness, or raising a family or the pursuit of financial freedom, having a sense of purpose will make all the difference in your state of mind regarding how happy you are.

People who are happy tend to be more giving since it brings them a sense of joy, and it's done with an attitude of giving for the sake of giving rather than an attitude of "what's in it for me?". These people are thankful for the way their lives have unfolded, and truly appreciate the people and relationships in their lives. By nurturing their special relationships with family and friends, they've learned the importance of eliminating negative relationships, when possible, which helps them stay focused on creating a positive environment around them.

Being optimistic while facing a crisis doesn't come naturally to many people, but the happiest people remain optimists regardless of their situation and do their utmost to find positive solutions to difficult circumstances. Try it! Instead of dwelling on all the bad that might come your way, try to balance your thoughts with all the positive lessons that can result from your state of affairs.

Never be afraid to laugh -- even at yourself. Laughing has a way of creating true happiness like no other emotion. It helps to extend your life, improve your health and it has a most positive effect on those around you. If you know someone who has a difficult time laughing, then you've probably realized they're likely miserable most of the time and you may even go out of your way to avoid their company.

Being miserable all the time and never laughing tends to lead a person to many failures since they're usually creating "self-fulfilling prophecies" of doom and gloom that generates a pattern of disappointment. Once this pattern is established, it's difficult to break out of, so consciously look at the bright side in every situation throughout the day. If you instantly believe you'll fail -- you're right -- since you're beat even before you start. On the other hand, if you take the time to review the situation from all angles, you'll usually find a path of least resistance that will lead to success.

Being consciously aware of all that is good in your life is critical to your happiness. If you have a good job -- be thankful. If you've been able to find and maintain a good relationship -- be thankful. If you've figured out your goals in life and are working each day to achieve those goals -- be thankful. Even if a situation doesn't come out the way you'd hoped it would -- be thankful for the lessons learned and realize that sometimes failure is, in the long run, the only way you'll ever achieve lasting success.
