Biking on McD's menu

by Andrea Beaman

According to an article in Reuters, McDonald’s will begin selling skateboards and bikes in an effort to get kids to burn off fast food with exercise. And, Ronald McDonald himself will be getting a sportier makeover to make him seem less pudgy around the middle and more athletic. Very funny!

I commend McDonald’s for a valiant attempt to change its unhealthy image, but the truth is, fast food is still nutrient deficient junk food and does not promote health in any way. If you have not yet seen the movie “Super Size Me,” I highly recommend it. It follows one man’s journey as he ingests fast food for 30 days and the detrimental effect it has on his body and mind.

With childhood obesity rates in this country skyrocketing, it’s imperative that we teach our children, and our selves, how to eat a more wholesome nutrient rich diet that will help to insure a healthier, disease free life. A better quality diet would include organically grown whole foods; whole grains, vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts, seeds and lean animal products if you eat meat.

It’s okay to eat junk food once in a while, but our kids (and many adults too) are addicted to fast food/junk food and eating it on a daily basis that results in our population growing sicker and more obese with each passing year. It seems like we’ve given up vibrant health for the sake of fast food “convenience.”

If we take the time to properly nourish our bodies with better quality nutrient rich food and daily exercise it inevitably promotes our long term health and shows up as:

Higher energy levels
Healthy glowing skin
Strong immune system
Reaching your ideal weight (no need to ever go on a diet!)
Naturally disease proofing your body

I too, was addicted to fast food and junk food, and it showed up on me in the form of overweight and a thyroid disease. After I successfully transitioned my diet and lifestyle from one that was disease-promoting (junk food, stimulants, lack of exercise) to one that was health-promoting (better quality food, daily yoga, exercise, meditation) it monumentally transformed my health and my life for the better.

You can transform your health too, one meal at a time, one day at a time. So get out of those fast food joints and get into your kitchen, to cook up a great tasting, health promoting meal! Or visit one of the many organic health food restaurants in New York and have them prepare a great meal for you.
