Does Hypnosis Work to Help You Quit Smoking?

by Paul Segnate

Smokers use various methods for getting out of their unhealthy habit. While some take medicines others find nicotine substitutes quite helpful. Surprisingly, some manage to drop their habit quite effortlessly.

However, another route to quit smoking has been found in hypnosis. But the real question is, does it actually work?

What hypnosis can do

Hypnosis relaxes your mind in a way that generates new thinking. It promotes calm, by reducing superfluous thoughts. And creates a mood receptive to newer thoughts or ideas.

A hypnotist knows how to calm the patient with breathing and imagery in order to settle the mind. At that point, the hypnotist can suggest things that will deter a person from smoking. These might be images of the harm that smoking does to the body, or it can be all of the healthy outcomes that the patient can expect. Either way, the person's thought pattern is interrupted and new ideas are put into place.

After the hypnosis session is done, the person feels relaxed and now has a set of ideas placed into their subconscious that should help them resist the temptation of smoking.

Of course, it varies from individual to individual how many sessions of hypnosis will have the desired effect. But, the fact remains that hypnosis has definitely helped smokers to quit their habit.

What hypnosis isn't

The myth that hypnosis is a remedy for the ills of cigarette smoking is just that! a myth. Hypnosis just spurs the urge to transform destructive behavior patterns into constructive ones. It can help to bring about a change in thinking. But you need to be sure you act as you think -- to redirect the urge to smoke. And bring some changes to your lifestyle.

The best way to go about it is to incorporate hypnosis as part of your overall quit-smoking program. Combining it with other methods, you can achieve you goal and quit forever. It will also help to do things you find relaxing in the day. Especially when you want to analyze your feelings about smoking. And want to come up with alternative ways to reinforce a smoke-free life.

The best results can be achieved if hypnosis is used along with other therapies to stop smoking for good. If you can find other ways to relax during the day you will look at other alternatives to smoking and lead a nicotine free life.

Visualizing

Put on some soothing music, close your eyes and let your body ease into a total state of relaxation. Visualize how you would like your life to be. Think of health, vitality and a nicotine free existence. Reinforce these thoughts, saying them over. Now open your eyes slowly.

If you can do this on a regular basis, you will help to create new synapses in your brain and create new responses to situations that would have led you to smoke.
