Improving Recall: Memory Doesn't Have To Be A Thing Of The Past As We Age
By J Wall
Many of us take it as a given that as we age there is no way to improve recall, that memory will simply fail us. Research regarding memory and aging is showing that we have more to say about the state of our minds as we get older than we may think.
No one likes to think about being old. Fears of losing memory and function can increase as we age. Many of us have known someone in their later years who had issues with memory, perhaps even severe issues like dementia or Alzheimer's. For years it has been assumed by many that it is out of our control and is just something that happens as we age.
However, improving recall and protecting our minds as we age may not only be possible, but also fairly simple. The stakes are too high not to try and ensure our mental functioning for as long as we can into our golden years.
We all know that exercise keeps the body healthy and slows the effects of aging on it. The same is true of our brains. The saying "using it or loss it" also applies to our minds. Studies have documented that those who retain the memory and brain function as they age tend to be the ones who "exercise" their minds.
Keeping the mind active and challenged was a key component of those with strong minds. They tended to do crossword and other puzzles that forced them to improve recall and utilize they brains. Learning new tasks also seemed to keep the mind from degenerating as it aged.
Another way to improve recall is repetition. The more we do a certain task or repeat a piece of information the more strongly the brain stores that information. "Practice makes perfect" is another of those sayings that is true when it comes to our minds.
Improving recall is also impacted by regular exercise. Aerobic exercise works the heart and keeps the circulatory system healthy. The brain is the largest user of oxygen among the organs of the body. Maintaining a healthy blood flow to the brain is important in helping it function. Decreased blood flow to the brain is a common issue in age related decline. Keeping our circulatory systems working through exercise keeps the flow to our brains strong.
Studies also seems to suggest that many of the diseases that affect the mind like Alzheimer's or age related memory loss are caused by damage to our brain cells by free radicals. These rogue particles damage cells unless they are neutralized by antioxidants like Vitamin C and E. Researchers are suggesting that people ensure they get enough of these nutrients in their diet if they wish to protect their brains, improving recall as they get older.
We also can have a say in our brain's health through the use of various herbal remedies. Herbs like Ginkgo Biloba have been used for years for its ability to increase blood flow to the brain. Also common is Ginseng to improve recall and mood.
More exotic sounding compounds like Huperzine A, which protects the brain's neurotransmitters from destruction and L-Tyrosine which helps in brain chemical production are also available in various supplements.
Whatever the method, there is now greater understanding as to how the brain is impacted by age as well as other factors. With that understanding we have a better handle on what tools are out there that can help us mprove recall and brain function as we age. If we utilize these tools, we can look at old age with more anticipation and less fear.
